It was shown by \textit{Y. Motohashi} [Proc. Japan Acad. 52, 273-275 (1976; Zbl 0355.10035)] that - under suitable conditions - Bombieri's mean value theorem holds for f*g (f,g: \({\mathbb{N}}\to {\mathbb{C}}\), \(f*g(n)=\sum_{d| n}f(d) g(n/d))\) if it is true for f and g. The author was asked by H. Iwaniec whether a similar statement can be proved for the ordinary product \(f\cdot g\). In the present note a counterexample is constructed.
