This paper may be viewed as an attempt to carry over to Lie algebras over a field some theorems in group theory. It deals with wreath products \(W=A wr T\) of algebras A and T. The author defines W in terms of generators and relations. The main results are established when A is Abelian. In particular, the bottom B of \(W=A wr T\) is also Abelian and B is a free U(T)-module. Hence W coincides with the Abelian wreath product introduced in [\textit{A. L. Shmel'kin}, Tr. Mosk. Mat. O.-va. 29, 247-260 (1973); translation in Trans. Mosc. Math. Soc. 29(1973), 239-252 (1976; Zbl 0286.17012)]. If \(A\neq 0\), \(T\neq 0\), then the center of W is trivial, W is directly indecomposable and freely indecomposable. In the same spirit, the author proves that the wreath product of two non-trivial groups is freely indecomposable.
