Let \((X,\rho)\) and \((Y,\sigma)\) be a metric space resp. a locally convex linear metric space and let \(\xi\in X\), \(\eta\in Y\) be given points (fixed). S is a non-void and countable set. The function \(f: S\times X\to X\) is a given function which is for every \(s\in S\) continuous as a function of a single variable \(x\in X\) and such that \(\rho(f(s,x),\xi)\leq \gamma (\rho (x,\xi))\) \(\forall (s,x)\in S\times X\) where \(\gamma: [0,a]\to [0,\infty)\) is an increasing and right continuous function such that \(\gamma (t)<t\), \(\forall t\in (0,a]\). \(\Omega\) is a subset of the space \(X\times Y^ S\) consisting of the points \((x, \phi[f(1,x)], \phi[f(2,x)],...)\) when x ranges X, \(\phi\) being an arbitrary continuous function mapping X into Y and such that \(\phi (\xi)=\eta\). Under these conditions the authors make a substantial study of the functional equation \(\phi(x)= h(x,\phi[f(1,x)], \phi[f(2,x)],...)\) where \(h: \Omega\to Y\) is a given continuous function such that \(h(\xi,\eta)=\eta\) and \(\phi: X\to Y\) is an unknown function. They investigate the approximate solutions, i.e. solutions for which \(\sigma(\phi(x), h(x,\phi[f(1,x)], \phi[f(2,x)],...)) \leq \epsilon,\) \(\forall x\in X\).
