The authors, after a paragraph on the theory of Sobolev spaces \(W^{1,p}(\Omega,X)\) whose functions are defined on \(\Omega\) open in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and valued in the Banach space X, give an integral representation result for a functional \(J: W^{1,p}_{loc}(\Omega,X)\times {\mathcal B}(\Omega)\to [0,\infty]\) where \({\mathcal B}(\Omega)\) is the class of the Borel subsets of \(\Omega\). On J(.,A), \(A\in {\mathcal B}(\Omega)\), they assume certain semicontinuity properties, a growth condition and the locality property that \(J(u,A)=J(v,A)\) if u and v have the same gradient on A, while J(u,.) is assumed to be a measure. The representing integrand is shown to be Carathéodory and, following a definition studied by C. B. Morrey, to be also 'quasi convex' in its gradient variable. Then an application is given of such result to the case where J arises from the \(\Gamma\)-limit of a sequence of integral functionals.
