The lambda algebra, \(\Lambda\), is the differential graded algebra over \({\mathbb{Z}}/2\) discovered by \textit{A. K. Bousfield}, \textit{E. B. Curtis}, \textit{D. M. Kan}, \textit{D. G. Quillen}, \textit{D. L. Rector} and \textit{J. W. Schlesinger} [Topology 5, 331-342 (1966; Zbl 0158.205)]. Its cohomology groups are the Ext groups of the Steenrod algebra \({\mathfrak A}\). There are several differential subalgebras of \(\Lambda\), many of which have geometric or algebraic content. In this note the authors consider a particular family \(\Lambda\) (n) which is generated by monomials \(\lambda_ I\) where \(I=\{i_ 1,...,i_ s\}\) and satisfies: \(i_{s-j}\equiv -1\) mod \(2^{n-j+1}\). The main result shows how \(\Lambda\) (n) and the cohomology of various finite subalgebras of \({\mathfrak A}\) are tied together in the cohomology of \({\mathfrak A}\) itself.
