The purpose of the paper is to construct a family of systems of imprimitivity for the group of diffeomorphisms Diff M on a smooth manifold M and to investigate the main properties of this construction. A system of imprimitivity \((E^ L,V^ L)\) is related by the construction to a unitary representation L of the group of jets J of local diffeomorphisms at \(0\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n\), \(n=\dim M\). The Hilbert space is constructed as the space of L-equivariant functions on the principal bundle P(M) of invertible jets, the structure group being J. The projection-valued measure \(E^ L\) on the \(\sigma\)-algebra B(M) of Borel sets acts via multiplication by characteristic functions. The unitary representation \(V^ L\) is constructed using the natural homomorphism Diff \(M\to Aut(P(M))\). It is proved that the equivalence class of \((E^ L,V^ L)\) is determined by the equivalence class of L and, moreover, the commuting *-algebras of bounded operators \({\mathcal C}(L)\) and \({\mathcal C}(E^ L,V^ L)\) are isomorphic.
