Let \(R\subseteq S\) be rings (with the same 1) such that there exist elements \(a_ 1,...,a_ n\) of S with \(S=\sum^{n}_{1}Ra_ i\) and \(\sum^{j}_{1}Ra_ i=\sum^{j}_{1}a_ iR\) for all j. This type of extension is called finite subnormalizing extension by the author. It forms a natural extension of the extensively studied class of finite normalizing extensions. The goal of this article is to discuss some examples, extend certain known results for finite normalizing extensions to finite subnormalizing extensions (Cutting Down, several results about chain conditions) and to show that other familiar results cannot be generalized (Integrality, e.g.). It should be noted that \textit{B. Lemonnier} has independently and simultaneously studied the same class of extensions under the name of triangular extensions and has also proved many of the above results [in Commun. Algebra 12, 3071-3110 (1984; Zbl 0562.16015) and ibid. 14, 941-950 (1986)].
