An explicit formula is derived that expresses novel solutions of the class of nonlinear evolution equations solvable via the generalized Zakharov-Shabat spectral problem as nonlinear superpositions of solutions of the same equations. The formula is obtained from the commutativity of appropriate elementary Bäcklund transformations. Applications to the Korteweg-de Vries equations are given.
