Let R be a local ring with maximal ideal m and residue field k, M a finitely generated R-module, and \(b_ i(M):=\dim_ kTor^ R_ i(M,k)\) the Betti numbers of M. The author proves some new results of the growth of the \(b_ i(M)\) and the radius of convergence \(r_ M\) of the Betti series \(\sum b_ i(M)t^ i.\) In the first part rings of the form \(R=S/Jn\), S local with maximal ideal n, J an S-ideal with Jn\(\neq 0\), are considered. The author proves that lim \(b_ i(M)=\infty\), or the sequence \((b_ i(M))\) is eventually constant. Moreover the sequences \((b_{2i}(M))\) and \((b_{2i+1}(M))\) are non-decreasing. If \(\dim nJ/n^ 2J\geq 2\) or if J is n-primary and dim \(S\geq 2\), further information is obtained. In the last part of the author considers rings R with \(m^ 3=0\). He gives criteria for the \(b_ i(M)\) to have exponential growth and describes the relationship between \(r_ M\) and \(r_ k\). Finally he shows that the sequence \((b_ i(M))_{i\geq 1}\) is stationary or \((b_ i(M))_{i\geq j}\) is strictly increasing for some j.
