Let \(f: G\to R^ n\), \(G\subset R^ n\) a domain, be a quasiregular mapping, i.e. f is \(ACL^ n\) and \(| f'(x)|^ n\leq KJ(x,f)\) a.e. in G. It is shown that the local index i(x,f) of f at \(x\in G\) cannot be too big with respect to K on a sequence of points \(x_ i\) which converge to a point in G too slowly or too evenly. The first author has recently shown [cf. \textit{R. Rickman}, Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn. Ser. A I 10, 493-498 (1985; Zbl 0584.30017)], that the points where i(x,f) is big can contain a Cantor set. On the other hand, this is impossible if the branch set of f contains a rectifiable arc [see \textit{O. Martio}, ibid. 474, 1-18 (1970; Zbl 0202.074)].
