Corresponding to a well known problem for periodic FC-groups, the author has considered the question of when an FC-group can be embedded in the direct product of finite groups and a torsion-free abelian group. The most satisfactory results are contained in [Sib. Mat. Zh. 27, No.2(156), 104-116 (1986; Zbl 0597.20031)] and are given in terms of a class A(T). Here the class T(A) is defined as follows: if A is a torsion-free abelian group, then the periodic FC-group T is in the class T(A) if every FC- group G with torsion subgroup t(G)\(\cong T\) and G/t(G)\(\cong A\) can be embedded in a direct product of finite groups and a torsion-free abelian group. The results obtained may be considered as a dual to those obtained for A(T) and there are many similarities in the proofs. The main result is Theorem 3: Let A be a countable torsion-free abelian group, \(\Delta\) the set of primes q such that \(A/A^ q\) is finite and let \(1=A_ 0\leq A_ 1\leq...\leq \cup A_ n=A\) be a series of pure subgroups of A with factors of rank one. Then the periodic FC-group T is in T(A) if and only if \(T\in SD{\mathfrak F}\), \(\pi (Z(T))\cap \Delta =\emptyset\) and \(\pi (Z(T))\cap Sp(A_ n/A_{n-1})\) is finite for all n. [If B is a torsion-free abelian group of finite rank then B contains a free abelian subgroup F such that B/F is torsion. If D/F is the divisible part of B/F, then the spectrum of B is \(Sp(B)=\pi (D/F).]\)
