The authors study the stable invariant subspaces of bounded linear operators acting on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. They define a modulus of stability s(T;M) whose magnitude measures how far M is from being a stable invariant subspace of the operator T. Some conditions necessary for stability are derived. Bi-quasitriangular operators are studied in some detail, and it is shown, for example, that bi- quasitriangular operators with connected spectrum are stable transitive. Finite dimensional stable invariant subspaces of operators T for which \(T^*\) is quasitriangular are characterized, and examples are given to show that the set of all finite dimensional stable invariant subspaces of an operator might fail to be a lattice, or to contain a rich lattice, in contrast with the case of the operators acting in finite dimensional spaces. The authors conclude by completely characterizing the stable invariant subspaces of a coisometry as right spectral spaces.
