The author shows, by means of some examples, that the motion of a linear elastic body is not in general uniquely determined by the boundary and initial conditions and the body forces. In the case of a one-dimensional isotropic hyperelastic body, the problem admits at least one solution, and the solution corresponding to any set of prescribed initial and boundary data and body forces is not unique in general.
