    \textit{B. Beauzamy} [Espaces d'interpolation reels: Topologie et géometrie, Lect. Notes Math. 666 (1978; Zbl 0382.46021)] has shown that if \(E\subseteq F\), \((E,F)_{\theta q}\) is reflexive if the imbedding \(j: E\to F\) is weakly compact. The author gives conditions for weak compactness of imbeddings for the Lorentz symmetric spaces \(\Lambda_{\phi}\) and the Marcinkiewicz symmetric space \(M_{\phi}\) where \[ \| x\|_{\Lambda_{\phi}}=\int^{1}_{0}x^*(s)d_{\phi}(s), \] and \(x^*\) is the rearrangement of \(| x(s)|\), \[ \| x\|_{M_{\phi}} = \sup_{0<t\leq 1}\frac{1}{\phi (t)}\int^{t}_{0}x^*(s)ds, \] and \(x\in M^ 0_{\phi}\) if \(x\in M_{\phi}\) and \[ \lim_{t\to 0}\frac{1}{\phi (t)}\int^{t}_{0}x^*(s)ds=0. \] They are related by \(\Lambda^*_{\phi}=M_{\phi}\), \((M^ 0_{\phi})^*=\Lambda_{\phi}\). The main results are: 1) the imbedding \(M^ 0_{\phi}\subseteq M^ 0_{\psi}\) is weakly compact iff \(\lim_{t\to 0}\frac{\phi (t)}{\psi (t)}=0;\) 2) the imbeddings \(\Lambda_{\psi}\subseteq \Lambda_{\phi}\) and \(M_{\phi}\subseteq M_{\psi}\) are weakly compact iff \(\lim_{t\to 0}\frac{\phi (t)}{\psi (t)}=0;\) 3) \((\Lambda_{\psi},\Lambda_{\phi})_{\theta q}\) is reflexive iff \(\lim_{t\to 0}\frac{\phi (t)}{\psi (t)}=0;\) 4) the following are equivalent: (a) \(\exists Q\subseteq \Lambda_{\psi}\cap \Lambda_{\phi}\) such that \(\Lambda_{\psi}|_ Q\cong \ell_ 1\), \(\Lambda_{\phi}|_ Q\simeq \ell_ 1;\) (b) \(\limsup_{t\to 0}\frac{\phi (t)}{\psi (t)}>0;\) (c) \((\Lambda_{\psi},\Lambda_{\phi})_{\theta q}\) contains a subspace isomorphic to \(\ell_ 1.\) The function \(\phi_ E(t)=\| \chi_{(0,t)}\|_ E\) is called a fundamental function of E. The author shows that if \(\phi\) is a given increasing concave function, there exists a reflexive symmetric space E whose fundamental function is \(\phi\) if and only if \[ \lim_{t\to 0}\phi (t)=0,\quad \lim_{t\to 0}\frac{t}{\phi (t)}=0. \]
