The paper presents a method for both left and right inversion of singular systems. The approach is based on a generalized Lyapunov equation representing a consequence of the algebraization induced by the application of the theory of orthogonal functions. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the solution of this Lyapunov - type equation are given and a generalized Bartels-Stewart algorithm based on the QZ technique is formulated for computational purposes. It is also shown how the Walsh expansion coefficients of a time function that are required to write the Lyapunov equation may be approximately evaluated using a numerically efficient FFT-type ``butterfly'' network.
