A rational approximation to the exponential is A-acceptable if the region, A, of the complex plane on which its absolute value exceeds that of the exponential does not intersect the imaginary axis (except at 0), and if its poles satisfy some specific conditions. This paper is about the A-acceptability of rational functions, p/q, where the degree of q \(=k>m= the\) degree of p, and which are also approximates of order \(\geq m\). The techniques involve representing the rational function with a polynomial of degree k which seems to satisfy \(k+m\) conditions, invoking properties of the shape of A, and manipulating the Laguerre polynomials and their zeros. These specialized results and examples are technical and not easy for this reviewer to appreciate.
