A numerical solution is presented to the problem of an elastic spherical inclusion embedded in an elastic-plastic infinite matrix subject to an axisymmetrical load. Various geometries and loads are considered for a wide range of materials. The analysis is concentrated on the stress distribution along the matrix-inclusion interface, and on the shape of the plastic zones in the matrix. This study has direct implications on ductile fracture, in particular on the initial stages of crack initiation and void nucleation.
