    Let K be a compact subset of \(R^ m\) with non-void interior and let \(L_ 1(K)\) be the Banach space of all real-valued integrable functions on K. For a finite dimensional subspace \(U_ n\) of \(L_ 1(K)\) and \(f\in L_ 1(K)\) put \(E_ n(f)=\inf \{\| f-g\|_ L:\) \(g\in U_ n\}\), \({\mathcal P}_ n(f)=\{p_ n\in U_ n:\| f-p_ n\|_ L=E_ n(f)\}\), \(Z^*_ n(f,p_ n)=\{s\in K:\) \((f-p_ n)(s)=0\}\), \(p_ n\in {\mathcal P}_ n(f)\). Let \(d(f,p_ n,U_ n)\) be the radius of the maximal ball contaned in K on which \(f-p_ n\) has a constant sign and let \(d(f,U_ n)=\sup \{d(f,p_ n,U_ n):\) \(p_ n\in {\mathcal P}_ n(f)\}\). The authors give upper estimates for \(d(f,U_ n)\). In some particular cases the exactness of these estimates is discussed. The second part of the paper is concerned with the approximation by polynomials and exact descriptions of the interpolation points \(Z^*_ n(f,p_ n)\) are given.
