The authors present a uniqueness result for a problem arising in electromagnetic prospecting. They show that under the assumption that the conductivity assumption \(\sigma\) in the half plane is known to be a bounded measurable function of the distance to the boundary only (layered medium), it can be recovered uniquely from the diffraction data from a magnetic dipole (inverse scattering) measured on the boundary (modelling the earth's surface). The proof involves the use of Hardy spaces and Laplace's transform. The problem is reduced to solving a fixed point problem for the so-called Marchenko integral equation.
