\textit{R. L. Wilson} has classified [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 236, 287-295 (1978; Zbl 0379.17001)] the finite dimensional simple Lie algebra L over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>7\) having a toral rank one Cartan subalgebra H. In this paper the authors compute the dimensions of the Cartan subalgebras to be 1 or \(p^ r-\epsilon\) for some \(r\geq 1\) where \(\epsilon =0, 1\) or 2. If the assumption that L is simple is replaced by ad(H) being simultaneously represented by upper triangular matrices on the root spaces of L with respect to H, then information on the structure of L/Rad(L) is obtained. As a consequence, if L is simple, \(\dim H<p-2\) and \(L^{(\alpha)}\) is a section of L relative to H, then \(L^{(\alpha)}/Rad(L^{(\alpha)})\) is zero or isomorphic to sl(2) or W(1:1).
