The following fixed point theorem is the main result of the paper. Theorem. Let X be a non-empty convex subset of a Hausdorff topological vector space. Let \(f:X\to 2^ X\) be a set valued mapping such that (i) for each \(x\in X\), f(x) is a non-empty convex subset of X, (ii) for each \(y\in X\), \(f^{-1}(y)=\{x\in X:y\in f(x)\}\) contains a relatively open subset \(0_ y\) of X \((0_ y\) may be empty for some y), (iii) \(\cup_{x\in X}0_ x=X\); and (iv) there exists a nonempty \(X_ 0\subset X\) such that \(X_ 0\) is contained in a compact convex subset \(X_ 1\) of x and the set \(D=\cap_{x\in X_ 0}0^ c_ x\) is compact, (D could be empty, and \(0^ c_ x\) denotes the complement of \(0_ x\) in X). Then there exists a point \(x_ 0\in X\) such that \(x_ 0\in f(x_ 0).\) The author has shown the equivalence of the above theorem with a recent generalization of the Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz theorem by \textit{Ky Fan} [Math. Ann. 266, 519-537 (1984; Zbl 0515.47029)].
