Let \(\{\mu_ n\}_ 0^{\infty}\) be a sequence of real numbers and put \(\beta_ n=\inf_{k\geq n}^{2k}\sqrt{\mu_ n}\). Then a result of \textit{T. Carleman} [C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 177, 422-424 (1923; Zbl 0049.188)] states that the Stieltjes moment problem for \(\{\mu_ n\}_ 0^{\infty}\) is unique if \(\sum^{\infty}_{1}1/\beta_ n=\infty\). This author's main result follows: Let \(\{C_ n\}_ 0^{\infty}\) be a sequence of non-negative numbers (i) if \(\sup_{n}1/n\sum^{n- 1}_{0}C_ n=\infty\) then there is a sequence \(\{\mu_ n\}_ 0^{\infty}\) satisfying \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}=C_ n/^{2n}\sqrt{\mu_ n}=\infty\) for which the Stieltjes moment problem is not unique. Also (ii) if the supremum (*) is finite then for every sequence \(\{\mu_ n\}_ 0^{\infty}\) for which \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}C_ n/\beta_ n=\infty,\) the Stieltjes moment problem is unique for \(\{\mu_ n\}_ 0^{\infty}\). There is included a similar result for the Hamburger moment problem.
