Upon the `derivation' of the Desarguesian planes of order \(q^ 2\), it is well known that the kernel drops from \(GF(q^ 2)\) to GF(q). It is shown in this paper that, in general, the kernel drop may be as large as possible, and hence translation planes of large dimension can be constructed easily.
