In what follows R denotes a reduced one-dimensional commutative Noetherian ring with total quotient ring K, integral closure \(R'\) and conductor C. A finitely generated R-module is called torsionfree if the canonical map \(M\to M\otimes_ RK\) is injective and the set of isomorphism classes of torsionfree R-modules is denoted by \(\Phi\) (R). With the extra assumption that \(R'\) is finite, \textit{R. Wiegand} [J. Algebra 88, 438-459 (1984; Zbl 0539.13006)] defined an operation of the group of units \((R'/C)^*\) on \(\Phi\) (R) and used this to tackle problems on the cancellation of direct summands from torsionfree modules, in particular when R is a Bass ring, i.e., when every ideal of R can be generated by two elements (and \(R'\) is finite). The present note defines such a group action without the condition that \(R'\) is finite and extends some of Wiegand's results to general R (as defined above). In these extensions the former role of \(R'\) is taken over by some module-finite overring S of R. Results on summand cancellation and power cancellation are followed by an application to the ideal class of a finitely generated R-module as defined by \textit{L. S. Levy} and \textit{R. Wiegand} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 37, 41-58 (1985; Zbl 0616.13008)].
