This paper develops a method originally given by \textit{D. A. Gismalla}, \textit{L. D. Jenkins} and the first author [Acceleration of convergence of series for certain multiple integrals, Int. J. Comput. Math. 24, No.2, 155-168 (1988)] for the summation of power series \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}\mu_ nx^ n\) where \(\mu_ n>0\) and \(0<x<1\), and x may be very close to 1. It is assumed that \(\{\mu_ n\}\) is a sequence of moments of a function f(u) defined on (0,1) such that \(\mu_ k=\int^{1}_{0}u^{k-1}f(u)du\) \((k=1,2,3,...)\) exist as Stieltjes integrals. The original ideas of the second author [ibid. 2, 135-141 (1986; Zbl 0603.65002)] are utilized to show how a bound can be derived for the error when the process is curtailed at a certain stage. The paper closes with two interesting numerical examples one of which is the following \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}(0.99)^ n\ln (n+1)/(n+1)^ 2=0.806314072429...\).
