Considering the first and the second fundamental quantities of the theory of surfaces in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 3\), \(K_{ij}\) and \(L_{ij}\), as functions on the 1-jet space \(J^ 1({\mathbb{R}}^ 2,{\mathbb{R}}^ 3)\) and, respectively on the 2-jet space \(J^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ 2,{\mathbb{R}}^ 3)\), the author gives an interpretation of the fundamental theorem of the theory of surfaces in terms of the pseudogroup \(\Gamma\) of local isometries of the Euclidean space \({\mathbb{R}}^ 3\). This understanding leads him to an analogous theorem for local immersions f: \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\to {\mathbb{R}}^ m\) \((n<m)\) and any pseudgroup \(\Gamma\) of finite type on \({\mathbb{R}}^ m\) (the smoothness assumed to be of class \({\mathcal C}^{\omega})\) under certain conditions. The exact formulation is based on the notions of k-regularity and \(\Gamma\)-automorphicity introduced by the author. Kuranishi's theory of involutive differential systems is used in the proof.
