The following theorem is proved: For every positive integer s there is a constant c(s) such that for every s-tupel \(\alpha_ 1,...,\alpha_ s\) of reals and every positive integer N there is an s-dimensional box B (with sides not necessarily parallel to the coordinate axes) in \([0,1]^ s\) with volume greater than \(c(s)N^{-1/s}\) which contains none of the points \((\{k\alpha_ 1\},...,\{k\alpha_ s\}),\) \(k=1,...,N.\) The main tool for the proof is Minkowski's theorem on successive minima. The result can be applied to obtain the (best possible) lower bound for the isotropic discrepancy of the above sequence: \(J_ N>c(s)N^{-1/s}.\)
