A complete blocked triangular matrix ring over a division ring D is a subring of the \(n\times n\) full matrix ring \(M_ n(D)\), for some n, of the form \[ \begin{pmatrix} M_{n_1}(D) \\ & M_{n_2}(D) && M_{n_ i \times n_ j}(D) \\ && \ddots \\ &&& \ddots \\ &&&& M_{n_ k}(D) \end{pmatrix} \] with \(n_1+\cdots+n_ k = n\). The authors characterize these rings by conditions analogous to those of the Wedderburn-Artin characterization of full matrix rings over division rings. To do so they introduce some concepts of weakened primeness and semiprimeness conditions as C-prime (C-semiprime), I-prime (I-semiprime) for rings. As main result it is shown that a ring R is isomorphic to a complete blocked triangular matrix ring over a division ring iff R is left artinian, C-prime and left I- semiprime (Theorem 3.2). Further the authors characterize non-singular left artinian left C-prime rings (Theorem 4.2). Two characterizations of left artinian, C-semiprime, left I-semiprime rings, resp. non-singular left artinian left C-semiprime rings are given in the last part of the paper.
