Let G be a finite subgroup of \(SL_ 2({\mathbb{C}})\), acting primitively in \({\mathbb{C}}^ 2\). Then G is a binary tetrahedral, octahedral, or icosahedral group. In [\textit{T. A. Springer}, Math. Ann. 278, 99-116 (1987; Zbl 0635.20016)] explicit formulas are given for the Poincaré series for covariants of G. In the present paper the author shows how these formulas can be used to describe the values of the irreducible characters of G. In particular, a character formula for the icosahedral group is given.
