A gradostat is a series of interconnected chemostats. This paper studies two mathematical models based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics to study the dynamics of two competing species of microorganisms for the case where there is a gradient of one limiting substrate and opposing gradients of two other complementary substrates. There is also a theorem which proves conditions under which the species cannot survive, even in the absence of competition. The results for systems without competition are similar to those obtained by \textit{B. Tang}, J. Math. Biol. 23, 319-339 (1986; Zbl 0604.92020).
