Let \((M^ n,ds^ 2)\) be an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold, dV the Riemannian measure, and p(x,y,t) the minimal positive heat kernel, of \((M^ n,ds^ 2)\). Then, for any \(\phi >0\) in \(L_ c^{\infty}(M)\), \((P_ t\phi)(x)=\int_{M}p(x,y,t)\phi (y)dV(y)\) is the minimal positive solution of the heat equation on \((M^ n,ds^ 2)\) satisfying \(\lim_{t\downarrow 0} P_ t\phi =\phi\) at all points of continuity of \(\phi\). The authors are interested in Riemannian manifolds where for every nonnegative \(\phi\) in \(L_ c^{\infty}(M)\), the locus \(H(t)=\{x: (P_ t\phi)(x)=\max_ y(P_ t\phi)(y)\}\) of ``hot spots'' is compact for all \(t\geq 0\). They show, among other interesting things, that if \(M^ n\) is the Euclidean space \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\), hyperbolic space \({\mathbb{H}}^ n\), or the sphere \(S^ n\) with standard Riemannian metric, then H(t) is always contained in the closed convex hull, \(C_{\phi}\), of the support of \(\phi\), \(S_{\phi}\).
