The authors study the relationship between the extension and the Zariski topology of semilattices. The basic role is played by the essential completion of a semilattice L. This completion may be realized as the smallest subsemilattice of the injective hull of L which contains L and has the appropriate completeness properties. The Zariski topology on a semilattice L is the coarsest topology for which the congruence sets of pairs of polynomials in a single indeterminate are closed. The main results describe the Hausdorff Zariski topology on semilattices, namely semilattices for which the Zariski topology is Hausdorff, and connections with essential completion of semilattices.
