    Let \(\Omega\) be a Jordan domain, \(\zeta\in \Omega\), and let \(f_{\zeta}\) be the conformal mapping of \(\Omega\) onto \(\{\) w: \(| w| <r_{\zeta}\}\), normalized by \(f_{\zeta}(\zeta)=0\), \(f'_{\zeta}(\zeta)=1\). Further, let \(\rho\) be the largest index such that \(f_{\zeta}\) can be continued analytically into the domain \(\Omega_{\rho}\) bounded by the exterior level curve \(\Gamma_{\rho}\). Finally, let \(\pi_ n\) be the n-th Bieberbach polynomial associated with the domain \(\Omega\) and normalized at \(\zeta\). The main result of the paper describes the distribution of the zeros of \(\pi_ n\) and \(\pi '_ n\); they accumulate on \(\Gamma_{\rho}\) in a precise way involving the equilibrium distribution for \({\bar \Omega}{}_{\rho}\). This is illustrated by several examples including the L-shaped domain. Essential use is made of a previous result by \textit{H.-P. Blatt}, \textit{E. B. Saff} and \textit{M. Simkani} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 38, 307-316 (1988; Zbl 0684.41006)]. The main result is generalized to rational approximants \({\hat \pi}{}_ n\) of \(f_{\zeta}\) in the case that \(f_{\zeta}\) has only simple poles on the level curve \(\Gamma_{\rho}\).
