The problem of the disappearance of the eigenmodes in an ideal fluid for small deformations of the velocity profile is discussed, together with the problem of the applicability of Rayleigh's theorem to real fluids. Only the discrete-spectrum modes are considered (shear flows of an ideal fluid always contain, in addition to discrete spectrum modes, continuous spectrum mode which satisfy Rayleigh's equation in the generalized sense; the modes are neutral in principle, and their existence does not contradict Rayleigh's theorem).
