We consider the pseudo-differential operator \[ L(x,D)=\sum_{j=1}^ n b_ j(x)\lambda_ j^{2s}(D_ j) \] on \(R^ n\), where \(0<s\leq 1\), \(1\leq j\leq n\), \(\lambda_ j^{2s}(\xi_ j)=| \xi_ j|^{2s}\) and the functions \(b_ j: R^ n\to R\) are smooth functions with vanishing partial derivatives in \(x_ j\). \(L(x,D)\) then decides a self- adjoint operator on \(L^ 2(R^ n)\) generating a strongly continuous semigroup \(\{T_ t, t>0\}\) of symmetric Markovian operators on \(L^ 2(R^ n)\). We then define its gamma-transform by \[ V_ r={1\over \Gamma(r/2)}\int_ 0^ \infty t^{r/2-1}e^{-t}T_ tdt, \] and let \[ F_{r,2}=V_ r(L^ 2(R^ n)), \parallel u\parallel_{r,2}=\parallel f\parallel_ 0\hbox{ when }u=V_ rf,\quad r>1. \] It has been proved by the first and third author [Infinite dimensional analysis and stochastic processes, Semin. Meet., Bielefeld 1983, Res. Notes Math. 124, 41-47 (1985; Zbl 0573.60069)] that, if the Banach space \((F_{r,2}, \parallel \cdot\parallel_{r,2})\) is regular, then the semigroup \(T_ t\) admits a Hunt process on \(R^ n\) up to a set whose associated capacity is zero. In general, it is not easy to prove the regularity except for the case that \(r=1\). In the present paper, it is proved that the space \(F_{2k,2}\) coincides with the Sobolev space \(H^{2ks}(R^ n)\), which implies not only the regularity but also the uniform lower estimate of the \((2k,2)\)-capacity of the one point set for large enough \(k\). In this way we get the associated Hunt process whose transition semigroup sends \(L^ 2\) into the space of continuous functions and satisfies a strong ergodic theorem.
