Let \(R\) be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus \(g\) with \(p\) boundary components. Let \(C(R)\) be the complex of curves on \(R\) and Mod\(^*_R\) be the extended mapping class group of \(R\), that is the group of isotopy classes of all (including orientation reversing) homeomorphisms of \(R\). Suppose that either \(g=2\) and \(p\geq 2\) or \(g\geq 3\) and \(p\geq 0\). The author proves that a simplicial map \(\lambda :C(R)\to C(R)\) is superinjective if and only if it is induced by a homeomorphism of \(R\). He also proves that if \(K\) is a finite index subgroup of Mod\(^*_R\) and \(f:K\to \text{Mod}^*_R\) is an injective homomorphism, then \(f\) is induced by a homeomorphism of \(R\) and \(f\) has a unique extension to an automorphism of Mod\(^*_R\). This extends the author's previous results in [Topology 43, No. 3, 513--541 (2004; Zbl 1052.57024)].
