The authors analyze the stability of a monotone finite difference scheme for the one-dimensional Burgers equation. Using the properties of monotone schemes such as the maximum principle, the authors prove the unconditional stability of a monotone (implicit) finite difference scheme of second order. For increasing initial data, the stability is shown in any finite time interval, while for decreasing initial data the stability is obtained only for some finite time interval which depends on the initial data.
