The author investigates continuity in the Weyl calculus and discusses new properties of Riemann metrics defined on sympletic vector spaces, quite independently from pseudodifferential operators (PsDOs). Preliminaries are introduced, including known facts, definitions and a discussion of complex interpolation. Necessary and sufficient conditions on \(m\) and \(g\) are established which imply that the Weyl operators with symbols in \(S(m,g)\) are continuously embedded in Schatten-von Neumann classes of certain degrees. In particular, the following are investigated: \(L^2\)-continuity, compactness, trace-class and Hilbert-Schmidt properties in the calculus of PsDOs. By means of an alternative approach it is proved that Schatten-von Neumann results hold in more general situations for a single PsDO instead of whole classes of such operators. A generalization of the sharp Gårding inequality is established.
