The authors introduce the concept of generalized Riesz operator and of generalized West decomposition of a general operator. The second concept generalizes the definition of the West decomposition of a Riesz operator. It is shown that, for any bounded linear operator \(T\) on a complex infinite-dimensional Banach space, there exists a compact operator (a perturbation) \(K\) with arbitrarily small norm such that \(T+K\) becomes a generalized Riesz operator. Finally, they prove that the following three statements are equivalent. (i) Every generalized Riesz operator has the generalized West decomposition. (ii) Every operator makes the strong Stampfli theorem true. (iii) Every operator has Apostol's compact correction.
