The authors consider the problem of electromagnetic waves in periodic media when the period of the structure is small compared with the wavelength of the field. They commence by expressions, the electric displacement by use of a time convolution with the electric field. Using a six-component vector approach in defining the field and homogenization, they show that the problem can be defined by a first-order linear differential equation for the vector together with initial and boundary conditions. They assure that the problem is two-dimensional and consider the TE and TM types of field, and analyze a number of differential-types of polarization. Suggestions are made for different manner of numerical discretization and the paper closes with some numerical examples which are illustrated by graphs and diagrams with suggestions for further work. There is a list of 27 references.
