Let \(A\) be an associative finite-dimensional algebra with involution over a field \(F\) of characteristic zero and \(c^*_n(A)\), \(n=1,2,\dots\), is the sequence of *-codimensions of \(A\). The authors prove the following main results: i) there exists a constant \(k\) such that \(c^*_n(A)\leq k\) (\(n\geq 1\)) if and only if \(\text{var}^*(A)\) does contain the algebras \(V_1=F\cdot 1+F\cdot e_{12}\), \(V_2=F(e_{11}+e_{44})+F\cdot e_{12}+F e_{34}\) (\(e_{ij}\) matrix units); ii) there exists a constant \(k\) such that \(c^*_n(a)\leq kn\) (\(n\geq 1\)) if and only if \(A\) is *-PI equivalent to \(N\) or \((C\oplus N)\), or \((U_1\oplus N)\), or \((U_2\oplus N)\), or \((U_1\oplus U_2\oplus N)\), where \(N\) is a nilpotent algebra with involution and \(C\) is a commutative algebra with trivial involution.
