The stability of functional equations was originated from a question of \textit{S. M. Ulam} [A collection of mathematical problems. Interscience Tracts in Pure and Applied Mathematics. No. 8. New York and London: Interscience Publishers. (1960; Zbl 0086.24101)], which was partially solved by \textit{D. H. Hyers} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 27, 222-224 (1941; Zbl 0061.26403)] and was generalized by \textit{T. Aoki} [J. Math. Soc. Japan 2, 64-66 (1950; Zbl 0040.35501)] and \textit{Th. M. Rassias} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 72, 297-300 (1978; Zbl 0398.47040)] and a numerous mathematicians. Many of the stability results are obtained in the framework of vector spaces. Utilizing some ideas from dynamical systems, the authors of the present paper prove a stability result for linear functional equations in metric groups and apply it to establish the stability of the quadratic functional equation \(f(x+y)+f(x-y)=2f(x)+2f(y)\).
