This paper proves several results in local representation theory using the Burger-Sarnak principle [\textit{M. Burger} and \textit{P. Sarnak}, Invent. Math. 106, No.~1, 1--11 (1991; Zbl 0774.11021)]. The method is based on global considerations and it applies either the recent proof of Jacquet's conjecture due to [\textit{M. Harris} and \textit{S. S. Kudla}, Contributions to automorphic forms, geometry, and number theory. Papers from the conference in honor of Joseph Shalika on the occasion of his 60th birthday, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA, May 14--17, 2002. Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press. 355--371 (2004; Zbl 1080.11039)], or a theorem of \textit{J.-L. Waldspurger} [Theorem 2 in: Compos. Math. 54, 173--242 (1985; Zbl 0567.10021)]. The first result is a proof of the relationship between the existence of trilinear forms on representations of \(\text{GL}_2\) over a non-Archimedean local field and local epsilon factors. The result was proved earlier in odd residue characteristic by \textit{D. Prasad} [Compos. Math. 75, No.~1, 1--46 (1990; Zbl 0731.22013)]. Next, the author gives a global proof of a theorem of Saito and Tunnell about characters of \(\text{GL}_2\). In addition, he proves an extension of the theorem of Saito and Tunnell, which he proved earlier in odd residue characteristic [\textit{D. Prasad}, Compos. Math. 94, No.~1, 19--28 (1994; Zbl 0824.11035)].
