The authors discuss a class of implicit difference schemes for systems of quasilinear parabolic partial differential equations in one space dimension. Partial spatial derivatives are extrapolated from function values at two previous time layers. It is shown that by varying the coefficients of these extrapolation formulae, computations in spatial subdomains can be parallelized. Results on the existence, uniqueness and convergence of approximating solutions are given, and numerical examples are given that indicate superlinear convergence.
