A class of groups satisfies the weak hyperbolization conjecture if every group in the class is either Gromov hyperbolic, or contains a copy of \(\mathbb{Z}^2\). A group is called CAT(0) if it admits a cocompact isometric properly discontinuous action on a locally compact CAT(0) space. The authors consider the class of CAT(0) 3-dimensional Poincaré duality groups over a hereditary ring with unit [see \textit{R. Bieri}, Homological dimension of discrete groups, Queen Mary College Math. Notes, London: Queen Mary College (1976; Zbl 0357.20027) for definitions]. It is proven that the weak hyperbolization conjecture holds for this class.
