Dispersal and dormancy, two of the most common mechanisms for dealing with patchiness, are to some extent analogues in that they provide the means for the evolutionary unit to average, respectively, over space and time. Our focus in this paper will be on the evolution of dispersal strategies, including situations in which some dormancy is assumed; in a sequel to this paper (Cohen and Levin, in preparation) we consider the evolution of dormancy and its interaction with dispersal.
