The ``Fundamental Theorem'' of stratified Morse theory [\textit{M. Goresky} and \textit{R. MacPherson}, `Stratified Morse theory', Springer Berlin (1988; Zbl 0639.14012)] characterizes the transition between different levels of the Morse function in terms of tangential and normal Morse data. The author presents a simplified proof of the theorem using the recent results of Du Plessis and Shiota concerning controlled vector fields.
