A new general framework for the construction and the analysis of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods is proposed. The DG method is characterized by three operators that act on the area terms of the differential operator, the jumps of the numerical solution and of its derivative, respectively. In particular, often used stabilization terms correspond to additive terms of the operators. In this generalization uniqueness may be lost under discretization. An example shows the delicacy. In the case of a piecewise linear function the discrete solution is unique iff there exists an internal vertex shared by an odd number of triangles.
