Vibration and dynamic chaos should be controlled and eliminated in structures and machines. This is the aim of the reviewed article for a nonlinear spring-pendulum (NS-P) system under simultaneous primary resonance conditions, which simulates the ship roll motion. Both passive and active control methods are applied. A tuned absorber, which can move in the transverse direction, is attached to the externally excited NS-P system. Active control is applied to the system via negative displacement feedback. Both regimes are compared. The technique of multiple time scale perturbations is applied. An approximate solution is derived up to the third-order approximation for the controlled system. The stability of the system is investigated applying both frequency response function and phase-plane methods. The effects of the absorber on system behavior are studied numerically. Optimal working conditions of the system are extracted for both passive and active control methods, to be used in the design of such systems.
