The paper is essentially a survey paper on the development of knot theory with a focus on Vassiliev invariants and the Kontsevich integral. The basic ideas are described and demonstrated in simple examples. The invariance under Reidemeister-moves of formula of third- and fourth-order Vassiliev invariants is proved.
